This will be my first post in the “Games” category. My general intent here is not just reviews of games, but discussion of games. Recommended reading: http://escapistmagazine.com and http://rockpapershotgun.com … both these sites feature intelligent discussion of both games and gaming.
Clones is an “Indie” game by Tomkorp. By “Indie” I mean independent and/or small developer and/or game that didn’t cost gajillions to make.
Clones is available on Steam (http://steampowered.com) for $2.50 for another 24 hours. Steam supports a lot of indie developers and is possibly nearly single handedly responsible for the resurgence of indie games. Clones has a demo available, so you don’t have to take my word for it, you can try it for yourself. For reference, you can get clones here.
I’ve only played the first level and the most obvious comparison is Lemmings. I’ll definitely be saying more about this game, but my first impression is wow. If you loved lemmings, you’ll be all over clones. The games are similar enough for comparison, but not really similar enough to claim that Clones is a remake of Lemmings. Be clear: I have very fond memories of Lemmings.
So far, I can say the update in the concept is very modern. Some of the abilities are similar, but the radial menu that pops out of each clone is very modern. Also… the idea of the clone factory (an item in the level that takes just one clone and makes many — thus “Clones”) changes the dynamic of the gameplay completely.
I’m going to give this one a “must play” this early … even with one level. Stay tuned for more.
